Outside Quebec, EI maternity and standard parental benefits pay 55% of your average weekly earnings, up to a maximum of $729 per week (2026). The extended parental option pays 33%, up to $437 per week. Only income up to the maximum insurable amount of $68,900 counts.
Maternity leave (15 weeks) is always paid at the 55% rate, even if you choose the extended plan for parental weeks. Standard parental leave offers up to 35 weeks for one parent, or 40 weeks when shared. Extended offers up to 61 weeks for one parent, or 69 when shared — that's the "use it or lose it" sharing bonus.
Quebec's QPIP is estimated using the basic plan at roughly 70% of income up to $101,000, with 18 weeks of maternity leave and up to 32 parental weeks per parent (37 shared). The real QPIP pays 70% for some weeks and 55% for others, so treat the Quebec estimate as approximate.
This estimate doesn't account for the one-week EI waiting period, employer top-ups, self-employment rules, or the income tax withheld from each payment.
